Digital calm: Evaluating the impact of mobile-based mindfulness interventions on academic stress among nursing students in Salem

Abstract
Background: Academic stress had been a prevalent concern among nursing students, particularly in India, where rigorous curricula, clinical responsibilities, and competitive assessments had contributed to heightened psychological distress. Traditional stress management strategies, though effective, had often been inaccessible due to time constraints and stigma surrounding mental health support. With the widespread use of smartphones among Generation Z students, mobile health (mHealth) applications had emerged as innovative tools to deliver scalable, culturally adaptable, and time-efficient interventions.
Objectives: The study had aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile-based mindfulness intervention in reducing academic stress among nursing students in Salem, Tamil Nadu. It had also sought to assess app usage patterns, participant adherence, and user feedback to determine feasibility for broader implementation within nursing curricula.
Intervention: Participants had engaged with a culturally adapted mobile mindfulness application that featured guided meditation sessions, reflective journaling prompts, and daily reminders. The intervention had been implemented over four weeks, with students encouraged to use the app for a minimum of 10 minutes per day.
Methods: A pre-post experimental design had been adopted. A total of 60 nursing students had been recruited using purposive sampling. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) had been administered before and after the intervention to measure changes in stress levels. App adherence metrics, including weekly log-ins and average session duration, had been tracked to evaluate engagement. Data had been analyzed using paired t-tests, and qualitative feedback had been collected to explore participants’ subjective experiences.
Results: Findings had indicated a statistically significant reduction in academic stress following the intervention. The mean pre-intervention PSS score of 26.8 ± 4.8 had decreased to 18.9 ± 4.2 post-intervention (t = 9.21, p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 1.19), demonstrating a large effect size. App usage data had revealed steady engagement, with weekly log-ins increasing from 45 in Week 1 to 60 in Week 4 and session durations rising from 12 to 16 minutes on average. Qualitative feedback had highlighted improved emotional regulation, better sleep, and enhanced coping strategies among participants.
Conclusions: The mobile-based mindfulness intervention had been shown to be both effective and feasible for reducing academic stress among nursing students. Its cultural adaptability and flexible delivery through smartphones had addressed barriers related to time, accessibility, and stigma.
Implications for Curriculum and Policy: The study had underscored the potential for integrating digital mindfulness programs into nursing education to foster resilience and prevent burnout. Institutions had been encouraged to promote such evidence-based digital tools as part of their student support services. At a policy level, the findings had supported the need for national strategies that leverage technology to address mental health challenges among healthcare students.
